Electronic Product Design and Engineering

Electronic Product Design and Development

As a design and build shop, we provide a multi-faceted approach to your electronic product design and development needs. After completing a system specification and high-level system architecture for your product, our electrical engineers will begin work on the schematics for the electronic component of your product. Housings and enclosures will be designed and modeled in 3D software by our mechanical engineers. Firmware that controls the electronics will be developed. Software for user interface purposes will be coded.

We would love to discuss how we can get your next product across the finish line using our proven product development process. Contact us or call 801-495-2310 and we will gladly speak with you regarding your exact electronic design specifications and requirements.

VPI continues to be a trusted multi-discipline technology design firm specializing in electronic design services, electronic engineering services, prototyping, certification and testing services, and electronics manufacturing for organizations in many market segments.

Electronic Design Services

The core offering of VPI Technology is Electronic Design Services (EDS). We design electronics-based products for our clients. If your product requirements include electronics, we can design it. The electronic product design services that we provide include, but are not limited to the following product/technology categories:

  • Sensor systems
  • Wireless (RF) access/transmission products
  • Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Zigbee, Z-Wave, LoRa enabled products
  • Imager/camera systems
  • Data acquisition, capture, and retrieval systems
  • Handheld embedded systems
  • Measurement and control systems
  • Motor control systems
  • Electrical signal analysis systems
  • Battery operated systems
  • Low power-optimized design types of products

What Level of Service Do You Need?

Sometimes you might only need someone to review your existing schematics, firmware code, or mechanical solid model. Sometimes you might need someone to complete one aspect of your product’s design, for example, the firmware. And sometimes you might need some help trying to solve a particularly challenging bug or issue with the electrical or firmware design of your product.

That’s where VPI comes into your product’s development picture. We can help solve those tricky problems. Many of our clients have come to us asking for help to fix an issue that was very difficult to resolve. Once they trust us to fix those issues, they have seen value in coming back to us to design other products or fix other issues. Many of our customers are repeat customers.

What’s involved in the Electronic Product Design Process?

Designing new electronic products and technologies involves developing system architectures, schematics, printed circuit board layouts, bills of materials, firmware, software, housings, EMI mitigation, design for manufacturability, verification against specified requirements, validation that the product meets the intended customers’ expectations, and many other aspects of the product to meet the desired functionality of the new technology.

Completing all of these tasks by an internal team can sometimes be challenging when your team is engaged in other projects, your team has some bandwidth but not all of the right capabilities, or you don’t have a team. Hiring the right talent to design electronic products can be difficult. Once you have hired them, how long do you plan to keep them on staff?

Engaging with an outsourced product development design firm can make a lot of sense. Whether you are looking to introduce wireless or IoT capabilities into an existing product, implement new electronic product designs from an initial concept, create circuit board schematics, implement a PCB design and layout, or a host of other electronic design tasks, we provide full-service electronic engineering, testing, and manufacturing capabilities for your project needs.

At VPI, we specialize in electronic design services and are certified to ISO 9001:2015 quality standards. Whether your project is complex or simple, we have the resources and expertise to help you bring your electronic product to life. Here’s how we do it:

5 Phases in the Electronic Product Development Process

Phase 1: System Design

We work with you to create a system specification document that outlines the overall product requirements, high-level system design, and potential design solutions. We also conduct research and select major system components while considering manufacturability and cost optimization.

Phase 2: Prototype Design

We design the electrical, software, and firmware systems and build working prototypes for testing, analysis, and evaluation purposes.

Phase 3: Final Design

We finalize designs and complete manufacturing design and documentation. We also build additional prototype units for testing and certification purposes.

Phase 4: Pre-Production

We fine-tune what will ultimately become the production standard, verifying the robustness of production design, fixtures, and jigs. We also solidify workstation documentation, tolerances, and workmanship standards.

Phase 5: Production

We manage the entire supply chain for production runs, ensuring components and raw materials are ordered in a timely manner to prevent production interruptions. We also sample raw materials and finished goods to verify that quality meets our high standards.
