CE Mark Safety Testing
Companies planning to sell electronics in Europe will now be able to test them against four CE Mark safety standards in Draper, UT. These standards protect users from potential threats such as excessive heat, electrical shock, and mechanical failure. In Europe, many electronic devices are required to pass such testing before they can be sold to the public. Safety testing is performed in controlled lab environments by test engineers who use specialized equipment to poke, prod, burn, and impede devices to confirm that they can be safely operated by the public.
Safety testing covers thermal, electrical, and mechanical risk areas. For an electronic device to pass testing it must:
- Remain at a safe operating temperature to avoid injury or accidental flame
- Have sufficient insulation to avoid user shock
- Demonstrate that it is mechanically sound
In 2015, there were 7,000 tech companies in Utah. Computer/Electronics exports ranked No. 2 on our list of exports. Today, the tech industry is strong enough to call the Salt Lake City area, “The Silicon Slopes.” Local and out-of-state tech companies use VPI Laboratories (VPI Labs), in Draper, UT, to certify and test their electronic products.
VPI Labs recently became accredited to test products against four CE Mark safety standards through the National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation Program (NVLAP) (Lab Code: 100272). This will allow them to serve a wider array of testing needs.
VPI Laboratories acquired and calibrated the necessary equipment, drafted safety testing procedures, and applied for accreditation.
VPI Laboratories can now test to the following CE mark safety standards:
- IEC/EN 60601-1 Medical Electrical Equipment
- IEC/EN 60669-2-1 Switches for Household and Similar Equipment
- IEC/EN 61010-1 Measurement, Control, and Laboratory Equipment
- IEC/EN 62368-1 Audio/Video and Information Technology Equipment
- IEC/EN 60950-1 Information Technology Equipment (Remote Feeding, equipment installed outdoors, large data storage)
